Cavtat & Konavle

DESTINATION INFO

Cavtat is the antique Epidaurum in the Adriatic, predecessor of Duborvnik, a medieval township constructed after a zoning plan on the slopes of a peninsula with two easily accessible bays.

Built over centuries on the principle of Duborvnik-style harmony, it was continuously enriched with both material and spiritual assets in every period of its existence. Its cultural and historic tale of unique beauties makes for uninterrupted reading.
The vicinity of Dubrovnik, Mediterranean climate and exuberant vegetation have made it possible for Cavtat to develop into the cultural. social, and tourist center of Konavle, that flourishes on in its natural beauty.
Konavle is Croatia's most southern region, shaped by the hills bordering with Bosnia and Herzegovina in the north, and by the Adriatic sea in the south. Konavle was the wheat field of the Dubrovnik Republic. The prosperity of this fertile farming area, a veritable oasis of welfare and progress, was highly enhanced by its centuries appartenance to the Dubrovnik Republic.
Spreading to the southeast from Cavtat, up to the cape Ostro on the border with Montenegro, this region consists of a littoral reef, the relatively broad and long Konavle field and limestone peaks of which the peak of mountain Sniježnica reaches the height of 1234 meters above sea level.

WHAT TO SEE

BALTAZAR BOGIŠIĆ COLLECTION IN CAVTAT
Museum, library and archives of Baltazar Bogišić (1834-1908), lawyer, scholar and collector of European reputation

VLAHO BUKOVAC HOUSE OF BIRTH
The Bukovac House is the birthplace and museum of the Croatian painter Vlaho Bukovac (Cavtat 1855 – Prague 1922), one of the most prominent Craotain painters and founder of modern Croatian painting. During his cosmopolitan life, conducted in America and Europe, Bukovac often returned home, where he left much of his work.
The house was bought by the painter’s grandfather, Giuseppe Fagioni, a seaman who married a local girl and took up permanent residence in the early 19th century Cavtat. Bukovac’s father made additions to the house, as did Bukovac himself.

THE RAČIĆ FAMILY MAUSOLEUM
Made by the famous Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović (1883-1962) and constructed by the last will of Marija Račić with white stone brought from the Croatian island of Brač, this mausoleum presents a unique harmony that mediates about eternity, cruising above the clear sea and the avenues of cypress and pine trees

KONAVLE COUNTY MUSEUM
It was founded in 1974 with the purpose of creating additional facility for people to visit during the Sunday folklore performances. The museum is located in Čilipi, in a house that was built in 1909 for the requirements of the rural savings society and cultural club. Prior to the Homeland War of 1991, the museum was furbished as a typical Konavle house with exhibits of men’s and women’s national dress and embroidery. The museum items were provided voluntary by the people of Konavle.
